tray icon started showing total unread count

Steps to reproduce

there's a setting to toggle the total unread count for the window title bar but this is unrelated. there is no such setting for the tray icon. but recently the tray icon started showing the total unread count in grey (not red like new messages), unrelated to the mentioned window title bar setting.

this should either be a setting or just off, like before.

Installation source is official OS repositories.
